Shooting in the Wintertime

In the winter when you’re wearing a coat, the length of pull will feel different than in the summer with only a vest. Your gun mount will feel different, and you will find that you are almost fighting to get the gun to your face and shoulder. An easy solution to this problem is to pull your front hand back on the forend of the gun closer to the receiver. With your front hand closer to the receiver, you will find the gun will mount much easier. In our clinics, when we demonstrate shots, most of our students’ guns are too long for us, and some are too short. We adjust to longer or shorter guns by moving our front hand back toward the receiver for longer guns and away from the receiver for shorter ones. This allows us to easily mount different guns that don’t really fit us.

If you shoot a great deal in the winter months, a better option is to have two recoil pads fitted to your gun. Have your gun fitted with a thick recoil pad (1 or 1 1/8 inches) for your “summer” length of pull. This would be your normal length of pull and correct for you when you are wearing a good-fitting shooting vest. At the same time, have your gunsmith to fit another recoil pad that is thinner (1/2 to 3/4 inch) to your gun. Your gun will then be 1/4 to 5/8 inches shorter with this pad installed than your normal length of pull. This will allow you to mount the gun more easily with the bulky clothes you wear when you shoot in cold weather. A little experimentation will be necessary to find the ideal combination of pad thicknesses that will work for you, but a good gunsmith will be able to figure it out. The recoil pad is very easy to change, and you can do it.
