Getting Ready for Sporting Clays Season

For most shooters, the sporting clays season wrapped up with Nationals last November, and you may not have given much thought to plans for the coming season yet. But, yes, if you want to perform at your best this year, it does require some preparation, and there’s no better place to start than with a review of last year’s shooting logs.

We are big advocates of keeping shooting logs, and for these purposes, we’ll assume you’re following this very important practice. Here are just a few of the points you can learn from studying last year’s logs:

  • With Nationals later in the year than usual, and thus an extended season, did you get burned out, or did additional shooting improve your tournament performance?
  • Do you need to schedule a break in this season’s schedule?
  • Did the pace of your tournament shooting last year work well for you, or do you need to space them differently?
  • Did you accomplish last season’s goals? Can you identify why or why not?

After reviewing last year’s logs, you should address some more tangible preparations:
  • Plan your first training date; depending on where you live, it may be coming up soon.
  • Order your ammo;
  • Start doing your gun-mount drills; we see amazing results from the OSP Flashlight Drill. There’s no better way to improve your shooting before you even go to the range;
  • Watch OSP’s DVDs and read You Gotta Be Out of Your Mind!

    Finally, make your goals for the coming shooting season. Only you know what you want to accomplish and what you’re willing to do to achieve those goals. But remember this last thought: Never get married to a goal, don’t be afraid to change your goals along the way, and forgive yourself if you don’t achieve them.
